This is the only loose garment in the lower half of the range, and the ten inches in its name is the inseam: the seam from crotch to hem, which is the measurement that actually decides where a short sits. Ten inches puts the hem just above the knee on most adult men and on the knee on a shorter leg. It is the length people ask for when a five-inch running short feels too short and a knee-length basketball short feels like a skirt.

Worn over a compression short it is the outer half of the pair most people here end up with, and worn on its own it is a summer short with nothing under it. Both are fine.
